The compose file's shape changes between releases — a service gets added, a volume gets renamed — and a file you copied from an old guide (this one included, eventually) will drift from what the version you are installing actually expects. Immich stores your originals, its own generated thumbnails, and — if you turn on transcoding — re-encoded video, all under one path you set as UPLOAD_LOCATION in .env. Put a rough figure on it before you commit to a tier: a phone camera library is commonly tens of gigabytes a year once video is in the mix, and Immich keeps the originals untouched alongside its derived files, so you are never storing less than the library itself. RAM: the honest machine-learning storyRAM: die ehrliche Machine-Learning-Geschichte

Immich's core server is not the heavy part. The machine-learning container is — it is what does facial recognition, object detection and the CLIP-based smart search, and it holds real models in memory to do it. Run it on a box that is genuinely tight on RAM and it either gets OOM-killed mid-job or drags everything else on the machine down with it.Immichs Kernserver ist nicht der schwere Teil. 4 GiB is the number that keeps coming up from people who have actually run the machine-learning container on a small box without it falling over, and it matches what vps-standard gives you. On a 2 GiB box, do not pretend the ML container will behave: either remove the immich-machine-learning service from the compose file, and also turn off Smart Search and Face Recognition under Administration > Settings so the server stops queuing jobs against a machine-learning service that no longer exists rather than leaving them to fail silently, or point the server at a machine-learning instance running somewhere with more headroom, which Immich's admin settings support as a URL you configure rather than a service you have to run locally. Running it anyway "to see" on 2 GiB is how people end up debugging an unrelated crash that was actually the kernel reaping the ML container for memory.4 GiB ist die Zahl, die immer wieder von Leuten kommt, die den Machine-Learning-Container tatsächlich auf einer kleinen Maschine betrieben haben, ohne dass er zusammenbricht, und das entspricht genau dem, was vps-standard bietet. The downloaded file wires up four services: immich-server (the API and web UI), immich-machine-learning, redis for job queuing, and a database service. That database image is the detail every "just use Postgres" instinct gets wrong: Immich ships a Postgres image built with the vector-search extension its facial and CLIP search rely on, not the official postgres image. release tracks whatever the project currently calls stable, which means docker compose pull can hand you a different Immich the day you least expect it. Point a browser at the server (http://<vps-ip>:2283 before you have HTTPS in front of it, matching the port the compose file maps) and register. That is the whole file — Caddy requests and renews the certificate on its own once this config is running, provided the domain's A record already points at the box. Read this before you buy: our VPS plans reach the internet through NAT IPv4 with a dedicated SSH port and a small number of forwarded ports besides it — whether 80 and 443 are among them depends on the plan, and it is not something to assume either way. Check what your tier actually forwards before you point a domain at it and expect a certificate to issue; NAT IPv4, ports and forwarding has the mechanics, and NAT IPv4 vs a dedicated IP explains why NAT works this way at all. That captures the database's actual state — accounts, albums, face and search metadata — in a form the project's own restore instructions expect. It does not capture the photos and videos themselves; those live under UPLOAD_LOCATION and need copying separately, and they are the far larger of the two. Do it in that order, and do it after reading the release notes for the version you are jumping to — Immich announces breaking changes there, including ones that touch the database schema or expect a manual step before the containers come back up. A pinned tag protects you from an update landing on you unannounced; it does not protect you from skipping the one paragraph that tells you a migration needs your attention first.
