Postgres and Mattermost each get their own named volume, and the six directories Mattermost mounts (config, data, logs, plugins, client/plugins, bleve-indexes) matter individually. logs and bleve-indexes are disposable — logs rotate away and the search index can be rebuilt. plugins and client_plugins are not: they hold whatever Marketplace or manually-installed plugins you've added, and a fresh image pull won't bring those back — you'd reinstall them by hand. config and data are what you actually back up. Mattermost may restart once or twice on first boot while it waits for Postgres to finish initializing — depends_on only waits for the container to start, not for Postgres to accept connections, and restart: unless-stopped handles that gap automatically; give it under a minute. Two of those settings are not optional. MM_SERVICESETTINGS_SITEURL has to be the exact public HTTPS URL of your instance — mismatched or missing, and OAuth callbacks, generated links in notification emails, and the mobile apps' account setup all point somewhere wrong. SMTP is the second: without it the chat itself still works, but password resets, mention-digest emails and any email invite silently do nothing. Set it once, correctly, and forget it; test it from the System Console rather than guessing. A setting you push in through an environment variable also shows up greyed out in the System Console UI afterward, which is a useful tell that it's actually being read from the environment and not from a stale value still sitting in config.json.Zwei dieser Einstellungen sind nicht optional. This is genuinely simpler than some self-hosted apps: there's no second protocol like git-over-SSH needing its own forwarded port. Everything — the web app, the desktop client, and both mobile apps — talks to the same HTTPS endpoint for REST calls and the real-time WebSocket alike. What you do still need is that port actually reachable from the internet: whether 80 and 443 are forwarded by default depends on the plan, so check before you point DNS at the box — NAT IPv4, ports and forwarding is the page for that. Team Edition's limits show up in the mobile app itself rather than in delivery: the in-app PIN lock, biometric unlock, and jailbreak or root detection are Enterprise features, gated by a license the same way SAML is. Without one, the app has whatever lock screen your phone's own OS provides and nothing more on top. Check its size on a schedule you'll actually keep, and plan how you'd grow it before you're doing so under pressure — add extra storage to your VPS covers the mechanics on our machines. Unlike some self-hosted apps, there's no single dump command that captures everything Mattermost needs to be restored. Adjust mattermost_data to match the actual volume name Compose created (docker volume ls shows it — usually the project directory name prefixed onto data).
